Claiming the Medicare Levy Exemption

Did you know that you could claim the Medicare Levy exemption if you are not entitled to Medicare Benefits?

You are entitled to receive Medicare benefits if you reside in Australia and are an Australian citizen or a person who has been granted permanent residency status. It is therefore possible to request an exemption from the Medicare Levy (1.5%) and the Medicare Levy surcharge where you do not satisfy the above conditions.

If you’ve already filed your permanent residence application, it is beneficial to take out Australian registered private health insurance coverage for you and family members if you have adjusted taxable income above $77,000 or family combined income above $154,000. This is because you will be entitled to public health benefits under the Medicare system from the date of application.
