Understanding tax effective investments

April 2012

The ATO has released a guide on tax-effective investments to assist taxpayers in making their investment decisions.

The guide outlines a number of common schemes that are marketed by advisors and their tax outcomes. Importantly, the guide outlines specific investments and structures that the ATO considers may lead to the application of the anti-avoidance rules and the extent of any penalties for taxpayers participating in them.

The guide also covers a number of structures that are commonly marketed for use such as hybrid trusts and self-managed superannuation funds and the tax outcomes and ATO concerns in relation to these structures.
