ATO to target visa holders
Holders of Australian visas should be aware that the ATO is now targeting data matching as a means to ensure it captures tax liabilities from non-resident, temporary and permanent residents.
The Australian Tax Office (ATO) announced a data-matching program which will acquire the details of visa holders, their sponsors and migration agents between the 2013/14 and the 2016/17 tax years.
The expected acquisition is likely to to collected the records for more than one million individuals, which will then be electronically matched to identify non-compliance with taxation law.
The ATO has made no secret of its increase in the use of data matching over recent years, particularly in regard to international taxation matters such as obtaining details of transfers from Austrac.
The data matching program will only increase the level of information the ATO will be able to use to monitor compliance and identify possible areas for review and audit.
